Why Do So Many Videos Fail to Perform?

Based in South Carolina and serving clients throughout the Southeast across the nation, Primeau Productions believes it is important to go about the business of video production in the most professional and ethical manner. We have built our reputation and expertise after working with clients for more than 35-years. We don’t believe in hype.

There is no substitute for experience

The truth of the matter is that many videos organizations produce fail to perform. Whether intended for promotion, instruction, safety, advertising or any other important purpose, viewers always have a choice. They can watch and absorb the information or stop watching. It is a surprisingly fine line.

For example, according to the latest video statistics for trainers, educators, safety and similar purposes (September 10, 2024), 33% of viewers claim they shut down the video because “they simply got the information they needed before the video ended.” This is not a positive. It means the content is too long, too repetitious or unfocused. In other words, the client has had their money wasted on poor content.

In the same study, 22% of those who watch training, instructional and similar video to be boring or uninteresting. Primeau Productions understands not every video contains life-changing information, but there are several techniques to keep viewers engaged through the use of voice modulation, special effects and movement.

One more point is that nearly 10% of those who stop watching video do so because of poor quality. This comes as the result of substandard equipment, poor lighting and sound and inexperienced equipment operators. Primeau Production uses state-of-the-art equipment and experienced videographers.

How Primeau Productions Overcomes Video Failure

Based on our experience, producing video for hundreds of clients across the country, videos fail for four primary reasons: Content, Quality, Expectation and the Platform:

  1. Content – Video that lacks creativity or authenticity is bound to be unsuccessful. Viewers will shut down their engagement with the content if they have seen the same “clever” attempts multiple times before. Good, solid content far outweighs amateurish attempts to recycle the same material. Content must be unique; it must have a specific viewpoint. To that end, whether it is instructional, promotional, a training tool or an important safety message, it must tell a story. What is the story and what does your organization want its audience to know? Video has changed over time and disengagement quickly occurs if the person (or narrator) delivering the message is unfocused.
  2. Quality – We can call it “poor quality,” or “low production standards,” or anything that detracts from the message, but trying to do a video on the cheap, or with poor visual effects, or garbled sound is a guaranteed way to fail. A strong word or two of advice here: limited budgets can be overcome if an experienced production company allows creative solutions. Primeau Productions has extensive resources to help augment limited budgets. This leads us again to the topic of experience. If the makers of the video are inexperienced, it shows. The outcomes of inexperience are obvious. Video production has become far too advanced for amateurish attempts to handle your valuable message.
  3. Expectation – Primeau Productions advises very specific strategies. It is far better to be specific in message that to “shotgun” several unfocused messages. Don’t weaken the worth of a message by trying to be everything to everybody. Primeau Productions often hears, “We want our video to go viral.” Please don’t allow the organization to fall into that trap. It will lead to outcomes that may be unintended. Prioritizing “clicks” over calls to action is a game resulting in failure. Seek deliverables that can be quantified over target markets that may have no intention of embracing a product or service.
  4. Platform – In this era of engagement and algorithms, AI and clickbait, it is easy to allow “the buzz” to replace meaningful outcomes. Don’t be led by the digital so much as the results. Primeau Productions can help you avoid that trap.
