Where is the Audience?

One of the biggest problems professional speakers face when being video recorded is capturing the reaction of the audience. Audience reaction, like laughter and applause, is important to video footage that will be used in a demo video because it helps the viewer gauge the success of the presentation. When a prospect meeting planner hears the laughter and applause in a demo video, it adds energy and is much more convincing than a video with a low volume reaction.

Being able to hear the audience reaction is very important for marketing purposes, as many clients who allow filming keynote presentations insist on keeping the audience faces out of the video. Some companies have a policy in place to avoid potential grievances. There is a solution!

In recent months, the pricing of digital audio recorders has gone down and the quality has gone up. This observation gave me an idea. Use a portable digital audio recorder to capture the sound of the audience. This Tascam DR-05 Portable Handheld Digital Audio Recorder sells for about $80.00 and records in stereo.

Below, this Zoom H1 Ultra-Portable Digital Audio Recorder is also a great recorder and sells for about $100.00.

My recommendation is to place this recorder on the front of the stage or in the audience and record your keynote presentation. Because the recorder is very close to the audience, it will predominately pick up the sounds of the audience reaction. It will also record your keynote presentation from the PA speakers allowing us to sync both recordings and mix the audience audio. The goal is to layer this recording onto your video recording to have an enhanced audio track. The volume can be adjusted according to your preferences.

Plus, once you own the recorder, you can use it to create audio product as both of these recorders have external microphone jacks. Purchase an additional lavalier microphone and place the recorder in your pocket when you speak to record your presentation.

Competition is heating up in the speaking industry and prospects have expectations of quality when deciding on the professional speaker for their next event. Production companies do not always place audience microphones when recording video. Using a digital audio recorder as a backup will assure that you get a good recording of the audience reaction to help raise the overall quality of your video recording.

 

The Importance of Audio for Video Production

It often determines a possible client’s first impression of your business. When you’re watching another company’s video, or even your own video, what are you paying attention to most? Probably the quality of the picture, how professional the talent looks and how the overall production is. People are much more visually inclined; it’s the sense we rely on the most. That being said, there are some other parts of professional videos we often take for granted.

The most overlooked? Good sound. When sound is good, it usually goes unnoticed because it matches what we expect to hear. But when the sound quality is bad, it is obvious. Not only is it distracting, but it cheapens the quality of what could have been a great promotional video. Also think about how you get your message across. You may look great on the screen, but you still need your words to get across what your company is about and why clients should hire you.

We’ve worked with some clients who knew their fair share about making videos, but didn’t think about recording really high quality audio. When they came to us with what they had shot, you could barely understand what they were saying! Even if the video quality looks pristine, people can’t get the full message without you explaining it. People often go by the old “fix it in post” standard. Unfortunately, most people don’t realize that it only works if the original recording was done well enough in the first place.

The best way to get clear and high quality audio is by using a standalone microphone instead of the camera’s built in mic. The quality is almost guaranteed to be better, and you can move the mic around to find the best spot to pick up sound. Microphones are a lot more sensitive than a lot of people think. Even aiming some microphones in different directions can drastically change the amount of sound you are picking up. Usually having a microphone, like a lavalier mic, right on your person will pick up the most direct and clear sound.

Even with a good microphone, great sound isn’t guaranteed. As I mentioned above, microphones can be extremely sensitive to small level changes. While we might not think much of someone getting really loud and then really quiet while talking, that can usually be too much for a microphone to handle. Sudden loud sounds might cause distortion, while some very quiet sounds might not even be picked up. Speaking at a balanced and uniform level can be difficult, but the end result always sounds better.

Our sound perception also often makes us unaware of background noise. Imagine sitting in a room with an air conditioner on. After a little while, you don’t even notice it anymore. All of a sudden it turns off, and now the room seems extra quiet! This is because our brain and hearing adjust to our environment pretty quickly, but they do notice sudden changes. Unfortunately, microphones don’t act the same way. A microphone will pick up all that extra noise the whole time, and when you listen back it will be very obvious. It can be easy to overlook background noises because of our perception, which is why it is always important to check your audio before shooting a whole day’s worth of footage.

To sum it all up, audio is a crucial part of making a professional video. It can be tricky, but with the right equipment and the right knowledge, it can be done. The Story Line vs. Video Production

Primeau Productions has always been open with sharing our successes and experiences with video. We always get great feedback from our readers and our clients rave about our work.

In this post I want to share a concept about the ‘story’, which in our opinion is more important to the success of the video than the production.

Every business thinking about producing video content to support their Internet marketing efforts has a story to tell. However, many businesses insist on producing resume style video content instead of telling their story. At the root of people’s motivation to view video is their desire to hear a story. Paul Harvey, legendary radio announcer told stories in his broadcasts. Then at the end of his story, he would deliver his legendary line ‘and now the rest of the story’.

Think about documentaries that tell stories, like the award winning documentary of 2013 Searching for Sugar Man. Even though the video production value is not great, it still won awards for best documentary because of the story! People love to watch video production about stories. Even professional speakers use stories to communicate their message. From the beginning of recorded time orators used storytelling to captivate their audiences.

Dave Grohl, drummer, singer and songwriter extraordinaire from the Foo Fighters and Nirvana created a HBO series, Sonic Highways, which has excellent stories about how music changed the landscape of America. He also used high end video production but kept it simple during the story telling portions of the show.

What can you communicate to your audience about your story? Think about how you can use stories about the history of your industry or family to make your video compelling. We believe that if you have a great story to tell and it is produced using professional video production, then video will help you gain attention from interested viewers on the Internet.

Three Tips on Getting the Best Video Recording of your Speech

15203734160_398bc7bd41Picture this. You’ve spent countless hours rehearsing until you’ve mastered your material. You’ve polished every intricate detail and solidified your informative, yet captivating, outline. You’ve pressed your outfit and you’ve got unstoppable confidence. You’re ready to rock this upcoming speaking engagement that is being video recorded. Your new footage will be part of your new demo video and video marketing campaign.

However, we’re willing to bet that there’s just one thing that’s missing from your oh-so-important to-do list. It’s something that almost never crosses the mind of most keynote speakers; but nevertheless should. It’s the format and method of acquiring your video recording after your speaking engagement.

Obviously, this detail only pertains to those speakers who are having their speaking engagement video recorded. So, if this is the case for you, then there are some simple tips that we believe are worth the time and effort to bring to the attention of the videographer(s) recording your event.

Now, for those of you who are not technology savvy, there’s no need to cringe. The good news is that many of the following points are very easy to digest and can make a huge difference in the quality of the video being recorded and turned over to you. These three tips will add a much higher perceived value for your demo video and your video marketing strategy as a professional speaker.

Once your speaking engagement is all said and done (and let’s face it, you pretty much nailed it) most videographers will hand you a burned DVD of your speaking engagement. This is good for you to watch but not good enough for the editing process. The reason it is not good enough for the editing process is that when a DVD is formatted, the original digital video recording is compressed. Compressing your video makes the file sizes much smaller so that it can fit on the DVD. This compression process compromises the quality of the video.  You see, when you compress video, it makes it quicker and easier to send to someone, but unfortunately the quality of the video is compromised, and that is something we absolutely don’t recommend doing.

So, what are your options? Well, what we’ve found to be extremely successful with our efforts in editing video is asking your professional videographer to take the video footage of your speaking engagement and simply drag and drop the files (preferably in .mp4 or a .mov format) onto an external hard drive or thumb drive. The key when asking for these files is to make sure that they are uncompressed. Granted the file sizes will be much larger because they are uncompressed (which is why you will need either an external hard drive or a thumb drive to receive the files) but the quality is far superior to either a compressed DVD or compressed files uploaded to DropBox.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with DropBox, it’s basically a way to share video files over the Internet with simply a click of the mouse that allows you to immediately download the video. Although it sounds pretty great, it does have its drawbacks. Mainly, the files that you wish to download via DropBox (YouSendIt / HighTail, or any other Internet file sharing) are often times also compressed. Granted, it’s much easier to use DropBox due to the ease of downloading digital video files. However, the reason why it’s so easy is because the files are compressed and smaller than the full resolution uncompressed version which is best for editing. This is much like the DVD situation we mentioned earlier and something you really don’t want when it comes to your video files. Not only does it reduce the quality of your video recording, it takes a long time to upload and download the video.

Last but not least, there is one other small detail that we believe is worth bringing up when it comes to your final video product; PowerPoint slides. Often times when we sit down to review footage we receive from a client speaker, it has slides that periodically occur throughout the speech. These have most likely been edited into the video after the video has been recorded or filmed during your speech. If you wish to re-use this video footage for a demo video or for video marketing, we’ve found it difficult to edit your message and content around these slides. It’s much easier to add the slides in later, during the demo video editing process, rather than to take them away and edit them out of a video. One final word about slides, besides making video footage difficult to edit; we have seen video recordings where the slides are the star of the show. On the stage is a huge bright screen with slides that mostly reiterate words that are spoken and a dark room with the speaker off to the side. This reduces the perceived value of your message and ruins the quality of your video recording. Sure slides can add value for your audience but consider the consequences on video.

We recommend carrying a couple 64 GIG thumb drives around with you. That way, the production company or videographer can format the thumb drive to their preferred format, MAC or PC, and transfer your full resolution uncompressed video immediately after your speech. You can avoid compression and DropBox hassles as a result and can get started editing sooner rather than later.

Video Production Company Calls Rochester, Michigan Home

From the incredible trails like Paint Creek, to downtown Rochester’s gorgeous Christmas light display, to the many breweries like Rochester Mills, Rochester and Rochester Hills have so much to offer… including being the world headquarters of Primeau Productions.

Formerly located in Ferndale, Southfield and Clawson, Primeau Productions loves our new home on Star Batt Drive in Rochester Hills. We have met and worked with several Rochester businesses and will continue to grow our local relationships.

Rochester thrives on its community, and it really shows in organizations like the Rochester Chamber of Commerce, which Primeau Productions recently joined. We are among the hundreds of businesses in Rochester – great places to eat like The Home Bakery, Dessert Oasis Coffee Shop and Roasters, gathering places like The School of Rock, Callahan’s and The Red Ox Tavern and plenty of family-friendly entertainment. Rochester is a community that has so much to offer.

As a video production company based in Rochester Hills, the Primeau team loves to film within the natural sets that Rochester and Rochester Hills, Michigan provide. We recently did an explainer video for Directed Sensing, a company that develops technology to read cellular waves in a given area. This allows law enforcement to find runaway criminals based on where their cell phone reception is coming from.
One of the locations we filmed in was Bloomer Park in Rochester Hills. Though it was a rainy spring day, the park still provided us a beautiful space to film and the location fee was very reasonable. We used the pavilion to set up shots that fit our customer’s vision perfectly and produce a video that represented their business (which is located in Knoxville, Tennessee).

Every year we bring on interns to help mentor them into the video production business. Last December, one of our best ever interns (who is now a full time editor with Primeau Productions) shot and edited a film showing the Holiday side of Downtown Rochester and the elegant Christmas display. She did an amazing job which is why we are proud to reprise her video in this blog post. She even captured a couple’s wedding right in the middle of Main Street.

There are many beautiful places and wonderful businesses we plan to interact with in 2015. Businesses within Rochester and Rochester Hills will benefit from Primeau Productions explainer videos. In fact, we plan to roll out a special promotion for Rochester Chamber of Commerce members. A community that fosters this much opportunity deserves to be seen by the entire world on video 24|7.

The citizens and business owners of these cities have really created something special, and it’s our job as a local business within this community to show how great the community is.

The Video Experience: Part Four – Publishing

image1Now that you’ve produced your video and have a vision of what your video marketing strategy will be, what do you do next? There are so many options and strategies available for your video marketing campaigns. Primeau Productions begins by publishing video content on several different platforms, such as social media and article based marketing sites, as well as video-friendly websites.

There are plenty of sites that can offer a solid platform for Video Production. From the world’s second biggest search engine, YouTube, to social video sites such as Vine and Instagram.

For now, let’s focus on the big two: Vimeo and YouTube.

Vimeo and YouTube have been around for a while now. Both are great platforms for exposure, but there are advantages and disadvantages to each. Here are some evaluations between the two.

For more exposure and advertising, YouTube is your best bet. For embedding video content in blogs and web pages, post your video content on Vimeo.

The best way I’ve heard the comparison described is by setting. YouTube is like New York City; a huge sample of our entire population covered in advertisements, where an individual can get lost amongst the chaos and lights of Times Square.

Vimeo is more like a college town. It’s much smaller, the streets aren’t as busy, and it’s much easier to find what you’re looking for. It’s harder to get lost amongst the crowd because the community is supportive and appreciative of it’s artists. Making this decision is just a matter of understanding what you are looking for.

Homepage Video

One placement strategy for your video marketing campaign is to post your video on your company’s website. Placing video content on your website homepage makes it easy for prospects to understand your company very quickly which is much easier than reading a lot of text. Homepage video can be a great way to introduce people to your products or services. Many businesses utilize these videos at the top of their homepage so that people can have a proper understanding of the benefits of doing business with your company.

Another content idea for home page video is client testimonials. Testimonials inform your prospects what customers and clients have received and learned from your company.

The best testimonials are sincere, genuine and honest. If the message seems forced or staged, then the connection a testimonial can make with a potential client can be severed. People like seeing raw, human emotion. You want to capture sincere honesty and genuine words about what your company has done, because people will respond to that.

There are plenty of places online to publish your content. With YouTube and Vimeo’s accessibility for embedding, these videos can be distributed to virtually any platform, including Tumblr, Facebook, Reddit, and other social sites. This allows you to spread your message practically anywhere on the Internet, which allows almost anyone to pick it up. This can lead to article based sites, such as digital newspaper publications or blog sites, picking up your content.

Similarly, the ability to upload video to specific social platforms is always expanding. Social image sites such as Vine and Instagram now allow users to upload video to their easy to use platforms. Facebook is allowing direct video upload now, as well. These opportunities offer even more exposure potential for spreading your message.

So during the publishing phase of your video marketing is where the video experience begins for your company. Prospects are looking for an experience when shopping for companies to do business with. By now, you should have a basic understanding of what we mean when we use the term ‘video experience’ and have some thoughts on how you can create that for your company. The Video Experience: Part Three – Your Body of Work

Primeau Productions likes to ask our clients about their “body of work.” Your Body of Work can be defined as the published and non published knowledge and experience you and your company have gleaned over the years and the various forms of content around those experiences. Content can be in the form of articles, journals, video, film, reports, white papers and any other documentation of industry experience.

Everyone and every business has a body of work. We have helped our clients identify their body of work and applied it to their business marketing strategies. For example, if a steel manufacturing company that was founded three generations ago has information about processing steel based on their experiences; that is a piece of their body of work. There are people out there who will be interested in learning what you have learned. This learning is communicated in a video because videos are easy to share and people like to easily learn from video.

If you are a printer and have a knowledge base of experience to share, this is a valuable body of work. Those experiences are valuable to people wanting to learn about printing. This experience translates very well into a video series and video marketing strategy. Prospective customers will be interested in reading and learning about your experiences which in turn gains you visibility. That content also adds value to your business and increases your friends and fan followers in social media.

Your business may have been interviewed in the news, published an anniversary magazine and have several internal communication newsletters. Gather this information and review content for a video series. You can also have it ready for your professional video production team to help you with the video production creative process.

During the creative process, we are able to identify marketing videos for your website and video marketing based on that body of work. For example, once the creative team begins to understand the steel business, we then help create a series of videos that will be useful to potential prospects and help you successfully grow your business.

The most successful companies in the world have taken their body of work and applied it to their business, creating video content and video marketing campaigns. Now, how can you identify your body of work and develop your Internet presence using video? What makes your company really stand out? What is the strongest part of your business that you feel people could benefit and learn from? Maybe it’s the friendly, supportive, and creative environment of your workplace. Maybe it’s a product or process that can help people live better lives. Maybe it’s a source of entertainment to help people wind down from their stressful lives. You want to showcase whatever it is about your company that you think will do the most good for the audience you hope consumes it.

The Video Experience: Part Two – Three Phases of Video Production

First and foremost, you’ll need something to talk about in your video.  In the last post, part one of this blog series, it was discussed that in order for your content to really stand out amongst the competition you’ll need to share something your business does better than anyone else. We believe every company does something better than their competitors. You have to identify what that is with your company. This will help your professional video production company create a successful video for you.

Write down all your ideas on a sheet of paper. There is something about the power of pen and paper that really helps the creative process.

Next, is there anyone on your team who has some acting background and would make a great spokesperson? We know from experience that people buy people. That is why you see companies like American Express with Tommy Lee Jones acting in their television commercials. If you decide to create what is called a ‘talking head’ video, you will need an on-camera spokesperson.

Years ago we consulted with a local Metro Detroit area window replacement company and advised retaining a local celebrity as its spokesperson. That person is still the face of that company and all their marketing and advertising video, which is growing every year.

Three Phases of Video Production

Pre-Production is the process of planning every step of your video production and beginning to think about your video marketing campaign. With the assistance of your professional video production company, begin by collaborating on a concept or creative design for your video and a strategy for the video marketing campaign.

The beginning portion of this blog post touched on some pre-production steps and activity to take when beginning your video production process. Conception and creativity are the focus of the pre-production phase of ‘The Video Experience’.

A script and/or storyboard will help you develop your creative design for your video or series of videos.

This aspect of pre-production seems to intimidate some. Time and time again, I have heard people approach storyboarding and scriptwriting with one of the following mindsets:

A. “I’m not a writer! I can’t write a script! Screenwriting takes years of experience I don’t have!”

OR

B. “I can’t draw! I’d never be able to create an accurate storyboard.”

It’s okay! This process is all about throwing creative ideas out on the table. Just because you’re not an experienced writer or an excellent artist doesn’t mean you can’t have creative ideas! A script/storyboard is as simple or as difficult as you perceive it. Try drafting out bullet points for messages you want to convey in your script. Utilize stick figures or basic shapes to convey your message on a storyboard. You don’t have to be an expert writer or visually artistic to accomplish this, you just have to be creative.

The key is to start with a creative core, and expand that idea as far as you can go. If you still don’t feel confident in your abilities, an established production company such as Primeau Productions can assist with making your creative ideas come to life. If you come up with some ideas, a creative team will be able to collaborate with you and get to the message that you’re trying to convey with your campaign.

The production phase is when you record video content for use in your video production. This involves video recording at your location, in studio, or at another location. This is also when you design the look and feel of your images and other graphics. By now you probably know what tools you need for successful video production.

Post-Production: This phase is all about editing, motion graphics, recording any narration or voice overs and mixing music into your video and audio post production. This is the phase where your creativity, content and conception all come together.

So, now that you have an understanding about the three phases of video production, start to think about how these phases apply to your business. The Video Experience: Part One – Three Ingredients of a Successful Video

Video is a tool to help your prospects and customers ‘feel’ your business. I believe feeling helps motivate people more than logic. When businesses can provide a feeling or experience for their prospects and customers, they increase their chances of earning their business. 

Video is one of the most valuable tools for Internet marketing. Thousands of businesses all over the world create video content to represent their company, and with the viral nature of today’s cyber culture, video is the most effective way to generate prospects.

We have noticed over the last 30 years in the video production business that the main reason companies do not create video or implement a video marketing campaign is that they simply don’t know where to begin. They either don’t understand the process or they don’t have a relationship with a professional video production company. They may also lack the creative vision necessary to design a video campaign to position their business online through video.

At Primeau Productions, we take our clients’ video marketing campaigns seriously. We know what it takes to promote your brand through video. We want to share some of that knowledge, because we truly believe in the power of creativity. Learning how to creatively convey your message is the single most important ingredient in a successful video. That is the purpose of this five part blog series: to help you understand where to begin with a video marketing campaign.

From time to time, with the help of my team, I create video of me speaking about some aspect of audio and video production.  I am about to record the second iteration of videos that reinforce our brand we like to call ‘The Three Ps of video marketing,’ Produce, Publish, and Promote. The Three Please help our clients begin to visualize the video marketing process. At Primeau Productions, we live by these three steps and guide our clients through each one, taking their businesses to heights that basic Internet marketing cannot accomplish.

Where to Begin?

It is a proven fact that video is the most powerful marketing tool available for businesses today. Video is the best method of sharing information about your company.  But how do you get started creating video content and creating a video marketing campaign?

Have you looked around on the Internet to learn what your competitors are doing with video? This can always be a helpful step. We advise our clients to review if or how their competitors are utilizing video before the creative process begins.

We suggest you think about creating video that helps your viewers solve a problem. Try to stay away from video that is self-serving and over the top, bragging about the success of your company. Rather, share useful information that will position your company as an expert in your field.

Three Ingredients in Successful Video

Professional video production companies who possess the three ingredients are worth their weight in gold. They charge accordingly for their services based on three components: creativity, equipment, and talent. The first and most important ingredient is creativity. Creativity is the invaluable ingredient responsible for the success of any video.

I polled my team regarding where they felt creativity came from. Some said that they have to be in a creative ‘mood.’ When you work with a professional production company like Primeau Productions, plan on 30 to 60 days production time to complete your video and marketing strategy. Creativity cannot be rushed.

My creative team also said that location can impact a creative flow. For example, some said that they get ideas in the shower. I suspect many of you reading this can relate. Personally, I believe that one of the controllable ingredients in creativity is to quiet your mind in order to let creative thoughts in.

My team will also use different websites to aid them in their creative process. Stumble Upon or Pinterest are great sites to generate ideas from.

Another comment was that creativity cannot be quantified. Simply put, creativity cannot be measured.

I feel that the following video makes a statement about creativity. It is very motivating and a great example of how creativity ‘works.’ This man started a business and is very creative in his designs and this video.

The second ingredient of a successful video is modern equipment. Professional video production companies keep their equipment well maintained and up to date.
